Capsule endoscopy
Description

Capsule endoscopy, also known as PillCam™, is an innovative, non-invasive test that allows Dr. Sindhu Abraham to examine your small intestine in detail. By swallowing a vitamin-sized capsule with a built-in camera, the device captures thousands of images as it travels naturally through your digestive tract.

This cutting-edge technology helps detect bleeding, inflammation, or abnormalities that may not be visible through traditional endoscopy or colonoscopy—providing a clearer understanding of your digestive health with minimal discomfort.

What Results You Can Expect
  • High-resolution images of the small intestine for thorough evaluation
  • Detection of hidden bleeding sources or small lesions
  • Identification of Crohn’s disease, celiac disease complications, or tumors
  • Guidance for further testing or treatment, if necessary
Who Can Benefit
  • Patients with unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Individuals with suspected small bowel disorders, such as Crohn’s disease
  • Those with persistent abdominal pain or unexplained anemia
  • People whose previous endoscopy or colonoscopy did not reveal a cause for their symptoms
How This Works
  1. Preparation: Follow a clear-liquid diet or fasting instructions as advised by Dr. Abraham to ensure clear imaging.
  2. Swallowing the Capsule: You’ll swallow the PillCam™ capsule with water—it’s painless and does not require sedation.
  3. Data Recording: As the capsule travels through your digestive tract, it captures images that are wirelessly transmitted to a small recorder worn by you.
  4. Natural Passage: The capsule exits the body naturally through a bowel movement, typically within 24–48 hours, without the need for retrieval.
  5. Image Review: Dr. Abraham reviews the images to identify any abnormalities and determines the next steps in your care.
Things to Remember
  • Wear comfortable clothing to secure the data recorder during the procedure.
  • Avoid eating or drinking for a few hours after swallowing the capsule, as instructed.
  • Refrain from strenuous activity while the capsule is transmitting images.
  • Most people return to normal activities the same day.
  • The capsule is disposable and does not need to be recovered after it passes.
  • This test focuses on the small intestine—other procedures may be recommended for a complete evaluation.

  • Plan for someone to drive you home after sedation.
  • The procedure is quick, low-risk, and minimally invasive.
  • Early evaluation can prevent complications and improve your quality of life.
Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
Description

A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a quick, minimally invasive procedure that allows Dr. Sindhu Abraham to examine the lower part of your colon (the sigmoid colon and rectum).

Using a thin, flexible tube with a light and a camera, this procedure helps detect inflammation, polyps, or other abnormalities that could indicate digestive issues or early signs of colorectal cancer. It’s an important screening and diagnostic tool that offers peace of mind and helps guide the next steps for your digestive health.

What Results You Can Expect
  • Clear images of the rectum and lower colon for accurate evaluation
  • Detection of polyps, inflammation, or early signs of colorectal cancer
  • Immediate removal of small polyps or tissue sampling for biopsy if needed
  • Guidance for further testing or treatment if abnormalities are found
Who Can Benefit
  • Adults with rectal bleeding, unexplained changes in bowel habits, or abdominal discomfort
  • Patients needing colorectal cancer screening but not yet due for a full colonoscopy
  • Individuals with a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps
  • Anyone with persistent lower gastrointestinal symptoms requiring evaluation
How This Works
  1. Preparation: You may be advised to follow a light diet and use an enema or laxative to clear the lower bowel.
  2. Positioning: During the procedure, you’ll lie on your side while Dr. Abraham gently inserts the flexible sigmoidoscope into the rectum.
  3. Examination: The scope’s camera transmits real-time images of your rectum and sigmoid colon, allowing careful evaluation.
  4. Polyp Removal or Biopsy: If polyps or suspicious areas are found, Dr. Abraham can remove them or take tissue samples.
  5. Completion: The procedure usually takes 10–20 minutes, and you can resume most normal activities the same day.
Things to Remember
  • Arrange for a driver if sedation is recommended (not always required).
  • Follow preparation instructions carefully for the most accurate results.
  • Mild cramping or gas may occur briefly afterward—it typically resolves quickly.
  • Flexible sigmoidoscopy examines only the lower colon; Dr. Abraham may recommend a colonoscopy for a full evaluation if needed.
  • Early detection through this test can prevent more serious colon issues.
Hemorrhoid banding
Description

Consider in-office hemorrhoid treatment with the CRH O'Regan System.  It can be done in the office, with minimal discomfort; you do not need to have anyone drive you home, and it does not require laxative preparation. It usually requires 3 sessions, at least 2 weeks apart. More information at www.crhsystem.com

Another option is HEMWELL, which is typically at the end of a colonoscopy or flexible sigmoidoscopy with sedation. After drinking a laxative prep and while you are under sedation, the physician determines the number, severity, and treatment plan for the hemorrhoids. All 3 columns of hemorrhoids could potentially be treated in 1 session.  Without tissue penetration, a probe delivers a low-level direct current to the base of the hemorrhoid. This causes a chemical reaction in the hemorrhoid, triggering ligation within the vascular feeding vessels. The HemWell process essentially allows the body to heal itself. The hemorrhoid begins to shrink immediately, and most patients feel no pain and can resume normal activity after the procedure.

What Results You Can Expect
  • Rapid relief from rectal pain, bleeding, or itching
  • Minimal discomfort during and after the procedure
  • Fast recovery—most patients resume normal activities within a day
  • Long-term improvement in hemorrhoid symptoms with high success rates
  • Reduced risk of recurrence compared to home remedies alone
Who Can Benefit
  • Patients experiencing difficulty swallowing solids or liquids
  • Individuals with scarring or narrowing from chronic acid reflux (GERD)
  • Those diagnosed with Barrett’s esophagus or esophageal rings/webs
  • People with esophageal strictures following surgery or radiation therapy
How This Works
  1. Preparation: You’ll receive instructions about fasting before the procedure.
  2. Sedation: Mild sedation or anesthesia keeps you comfortable throughout.
  3. Endoscopic Examination: Dr. Abraham inserts an endoscope to locate the narrowed area.
  4. Dilation: A special balloon or dilator gently stretches the narrowed section of the esophagus.
  5. Recovery: The procedure typically takes less than 30 minutes, and most patients return home the same day.
Things to Remember
  • Arrange for someone to drive you home after sedation.
  • You may experience mild throat soreness or discomfort for a day or two.
  • Follow dietary instructions (soft foods or liquids) as recommended after the procedure.
  • Report any chest pain, fever, or severe difficulty swallowing to Dr. Abraham’s office immediately.
  • Some patients may require repeat dilations for lasting results.
Esophageal Dilation
Description

Esophageal dilation is a safe, minimally invasive procedure used to widen a narrowed section of the esophagus—the muscular tube that carries food and liquids from your mouth to your stomach.

Narrowing (stricture) can occur due to chronic acid reflux, scarring, or certain conditions like Barrett’s esophagus. Using a specialized endoscope and gentle stretching tools, Dr. Sindhu Abraham restores proper swallowing function, relieving discomfort and improving your ability to eat and drink normally.

What Results You Can Expect
  • Immediate relief from difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Improved ability to eat and drink comfortably
  • Reduced risk of choking or food impaction
  • Long-term management of esophageal strictures with follow-up care if needed
Who Can Benefit
  • Adults experiencing persistent or painful internal hemorrhoids
  • Patients who have not found relief with dietary changes or topical treatments
  • Individuals experiencing rectal bleeding or discomfort affecting daily life
  • Anyone seeking a minimally invasive alternative to surgery
How This Works
  1. Consultation: Dr. Abraham evaluates your symptoms and confirms hemorrhoid banding is the right option.
  2. Preparation: No special fasting or anesthesia is usually required.
  3. Banding Procedure: Using the HemWell device, gentle suction draws the hemorrhoid into position, and a small rubber band is placed at its base.
  4. Completion: The procedure takes only a few minutes per hemorrhoid and is performed in-office.
  5. Healing: Over 7–10 days, the banded hemorrhoid falls off naturally, leaving healthy tissue behind.
Things to Remember
  • Arrange for light activity after your procedure—most patients return to work the same day.
  • Mild pressure or a sensation of fullness is normal and resolves quickly.
  • Avoid heavy lifting or straining for a few days.
  • Maintain a high-fiber diet and drink plenty of water to prevent future hemorrhoids.
  • Contact Dr. Abraham’s office if you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, or signs of infection.
Bravo™ Reflux Testing
Description

Bravo™ Reflux Testing is a state-of-the-art, minimally invasive procedure that measures acid levels in your esophagus to accurately diagnose gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Unlike traditional catheter-based tests, Bravo™ uses a small wireless capsule placed in your esophagus during a brief endoscopic procedure.

The capsule transmits pH data to a recorder worn on your waistband, allowing Dr. Sindhu Abraham to evaluate your acid reflux patterns over 48–96 hours. This advanced technology ensures comfort, precision, and a more natural assessment of your symptoms while you continue your regular daily activities.

What Results You Can Expect
  • Accurate measurement of esophageal acid exposure
  • A clearer understanding of reflux patterns over several days
  • Better identification of GERD or related complications
  • Minimal disruption to your daily routine
  • Precise data to guide your personalized treatment plan
Who Can Benefit
  • Patients with frequent heartburn or regurgitation unresponsive to medications
  • Individuals with chest pain not related to heart conditions
  • People with chronic cough, hoarseness, or other atypical reflux symptoms
  • Patients being evaluated for GERD before surgery or advanced therapy
How This Works
  1. Preparation: You’ll receive instructions about fasting and medications before the procedure.
  2. Capsule Placement: During a brief upper endoscopy, Dr. Abraham attaches the Bravo capsule to your esophagus wall.
  3. Monitoring: The capsule wirelessly records pH levels for 48–96 hours while you eat, sleep, and live normally.
  4. Data Collection: You’ll log meals, symptoms, and activities in a diary for accurate analysis.
  5. Analysis & Follow-Up: Dr. Abraham reviews the results and discusses tailored treatment options with you.
Things to Remember
  • Avoid MRI scans until the capsule naturally detaches (usually within 5–7 days).
  • Follow all fasting and medication instructions for accurate results.
  • You may feel a mild sensation in your chest that resolves within a day.
  • Continue your normal diet and activities to ensure reliable monitoring.
  • Contact Dr. Abraham’s office if you experience severe chest pain, difficulty swallowing, or unusual symptoms.
